Volkswagen Ameo Overview

Volkswagen entered India more than 7 years back but initially they offered only premium vehicles in the country. Later on, the company started offering the Polo and Vento which are locally made products, targeted towards mass-market segments. The Polo and Vento brought in decent sales but they were still far lower than expectations. Volkswagen has now come up with a new product which is made solely for India and it is positioned in the crowded compact sedan segment, competing with a lot of established rivals. Volkswagen Ameo Look

In terms of looks, the Ameo appears to be a carbon copy of siblings Polo and Vento. This is indeed a good approach as it gets the signature face. But on the other hand, there is nothing unique or no major element to differentiate it from other cars in the family. There are differences but they are so minuscule to be noticed. For example, the front overhang of Polo measuring 35mm has been reduced to add more length and provide better flow to the sedan profile.

At the front, the car boasts of dual barrel halogen headlights and multi-slat grille. The revised front bumper which was incorporated in the Polo facelift makes its way into Ameo as well. The bumper also features a chrome strip that runs along the length while the fog lamps at each side are loaded with static cornering lights. The side profile is also identical to the sibling however, things start to vary after the C-pillar with the integration of the boot. Further, the car sits on 15-inch wheels which are also borrowed from the Polo hatchback.

While compact sedans are infamous for their disproportionate viewing angles, Volkswagen Ameo is an exception. Yes, the carmaker has done a near-perfect job in integrating the boot to the rear profile. The taillights with faux-LED graphics have their distinct design and with the lines on the boot lid, it seems it’s an attempt to lend a wider appearance to the car. Moreover, there are some interesting bits including laser welded roof which gives a classic look from the rear. Overall, the carmaker has done its best to execute the design of Ameo.

Volkswagen Ameo Comfort

On the inside, the Ameo is offering high quality interiors. The fit and finish on the inside is good and even the look and feel of the materials. The cabin feels a bit outdated in design. In terms of features, it gets most of it. There is a touchscreen system, reverse parking camera, Apple Car Play and a lot more features. Dual airbags and ABS is a standard feature across all variants.

The front seats are large and comfortable too. The second row gets tight on knee room and this is a drawback considering most of the competition. Tall people might not be very comfortable at the rear. For this reason, the Ameo is a good option to buy for those who drive themselves. There is a rear AC vent in the Ameo and a bottle holder as well. The boot isn’t the largest, but the rear seats fold and this is a unique feature for a compact sedan.

Volkswagen Ameo Transmission

The Volkswagen Ameo has been launched with only the 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder, MPI petrol engine. This engine produces 75 PS of power and 110 Nm of torque and it comes mated to a 5-speed transmission. The German is not offering the 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the Polo and Vento in the Ameo yet. Also, the Ameo will be getting a 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine mated to 5-speed manual and 6-speed DSG transmissions but this oil-burner will be launched only during the festive season. Talking about the MPI engine, it comes across as a major disappointment because it has a very poor low-end and mid-range. In fact, the engine doesn’t impress even at the higher spectrum of the RPM range. City drivability is just about average and this mill is just not meant for highway driving. Redline comes in early at 6000 RPM. To keep the car moving, you always need to keep the engine on the boil. The engine also gets very vocal and at higher RPMs, a lot of noise filters inside the cabin. 100 km/hr comes up in 3rd gear while in top gear, the Ameo touches the ton at 2900 RPM.

If you’re looking for performance, you better stay away from the Ameo because the engine feels the most inferior in its segment which consists of the Maruti Swift DZire, Tata Zest, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and Ford Figo Aspire. Gear shifts are pretty slick though but the MPI mill doesn’t impress even in terms of fuel efficiency. The ARAI-rating of 17.83 km/l is also the lowest in its segment. We are really waiting for the updated diesel engine to arrive because it will be a blast to drive with 108 PS of power.

Volkswagen Ameo Driving

Drivability is good on both. The sudden boost after 1800rpm is reveling. There is always the joy of driving the diesel engine. Also, the clutch is a tad deeper than the petrol engine. The diesel clutch is heavy, which makes it difficult to drive in city traffic.As it is based on the same platform like the Polo and Vento, handling isn’t any problem. The ride is supple and smooth. Volkswagen has been improving the ride quality on its cars and the Ameo gets improved one too. The steering wheel is light and easy to drive in the city. The Highline variant gets leather wrapped steering wheel, which feels nice to grip.

Volkswagen Ameo Safety

The car incorporates disc brakes at front and drums at the rear, just like other vehicles in the class. The brakes have a strong bite and don’t feel trouble at stopping from high speeds. For more braking strength, the carmaker has provided ABS as standard fitment in the car.In terms of safety, the standard features also include dual front airbags, height adjustable head restraints, and rear fog lamps. Move on to the top variants and you will get electronic stabilization programme (ESP) on diesel trims, rear defogger, static cornering lights, hill hold control, rear parking camera with sensors and auto-dimming IRVM.

Volkswagen Ameo Final Word

The Volkswagen Ameo is unlike any other compact sedan. While its rivals have a lot of space and are far more practical, the Ameo excels in terms of equipment, quality, build, value-for-money factor and also the fact that Volkswagen is considered a premium brand. The Ameo loses out on space and the rear seats are best kept for children. The vehicle also has below average performance. Most people who buy a compact sedan over a premium hatchback only do so because they get the snob value of a sedan and the Ameo fulfils that requirement properly. The Volkswagen Ameo can be a good choice for someone who wants a German car on a budget because this is also the only German car in its segment currently.

Volkswagen Ameo is offered in four variants: Trendline, Comfortline, Highline and Highline Plus. As far as the pricing is concerned, Volkswagen Ameo’s base trim Trendline gets the price tag of Rs. 5.62 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 6.65 lakh for the diesel variant. Its mid-range trim Comfortline gets the price tag of Rs. 6.16 lakh and Rs. 7.59 lakh for the petrol and diesel variants respectively. The top-selling trim 1.0L MPI Highline is available at the price tag of Rs. 7.15 lakh while the range-topping Highline Plus variant is tagged at Rs. 7.58 lakh for the petrol and Rs. 8.71 lakh for the diesel trim, ex-showroom, New Delhi.
