Honda Accord Overview
It’s been 41 years since Honda introduced the Accord to the compact market and, in that time, it has been through 10 generational shifts, with the most recent occurring for the 2018 model year. And it came quite quickly as well, considering the ninth-gen model only ran a total of four years – a very short life cycle for a car as raved about as the Accord. For 2018, however, Honda has tried to fix all of the sedan’s little shortcomings, and it has done a pretty good job. Highlights of the new-gen model include two new, turbocharged, four-cylinder engines (sorry, folks – no V-6 this time around) to go with a new 10-speed automatic transmission, an all-new chassis design, heavily revamped interior, and a reworked body. It also sees the use of more ultra-high-strength steel than any other Honda in production today, which should make for a safe vehicle.Apply car loan for Honda Accord.
However, it’s not all peaches and cream. While there’s been a lot of work done inside and under the skin, the Accord doesn’t seem to live up to the hype. Not that I’m saying it’s an ugly car by any means (it’s actually quite attractive from most angles), but what’s going on up front with that big, open grille? My initial thoughts are that there’s a piece of gloss black trim missing from the front end. But, then again, looks aren’t everything, so maybe it’s not so bad – I’ll leave that decision up to you. For now, we need to find out if it has what it takes to compete against the new Toyota Camry and Hyundai Sonata, so let’s dive on in and figure it out.
Honda Accord Design & Style
The ninth generation Accord certainly looks sophisticated than the previous versions. It features a sharp and handsome design that despite being new, shows the traits of the previous generation Accord. The face really looks flamboyant and futuristic featuring LED headlights with auto levelling and active cornering functionality. The stuffy nose of the previous version has been replaced by a more compact one. The thick chrome grille is now part of every Honda sedan in the country. Then the road presence is further strengthened from bright LED daytime running lights. The front bumper also features a wide air dam with a honeycomb mesh grille and LED fog lamps on each corner.
The new Accord is the lengthiest in the segment but that does not mean this would translate to more interior space. The hybrid powertrain takes up a lot of space. This has been done to make the car suppler and stiffer by about 40 percent. The muscular stance is accentuated by the flared wheel arches and 18-inch alloys. There are strong creases running across the shoulder line. There is more chrome on the door handles and the window sills that enhance the premium quotient. At the rear, the LED tail lamps are detailed while the rear spoiler and thick chrome strip just give the car the right amount of muscle it needs.
Honda Accord Cabin & Space
Inside, the dashboard is minimalistic and that works pretty well in favour of the car. And honestly, the fit and finish of the car are on par with what German rivals are offering. The gorgeous layering of the centre console can compel anyone to spend more time in the cabin. The two big screens at the centre catch the attention instantly. The upper 7-inch screen shows navigation, time, audio information and displays visuals from the camera mounted below the left wing mirror known as LaneWatch. The lower 7.7-inch screen is meant for entertainment and information of the hybrid system. The same infotainment also supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay while the source of decibels is the 6-speakers sound system.
Another super cool feature in the car includes remote starting of the engine for powering up the air conditioning. This is really helpful in the blistering summer when you are in dire need of cooling. The plethora of comfort features include one-touch electric sunroof, automatic climate control, 8-way power adjustable driver seat with memory function, push-button engine start, rear ac vents, cruise control and rain sensing wipers among others.
The leather or piano black & wood finishing on the steering wheel really uplifts the premium quotient. The instrument cluster features advanced combimeter with a multi-information display including dual tripmeter and average fuel consumption. The elite buyers would love to be seated in the utter comfort environment this car provides. The space is humongous, despite the fact that the wheelbase is slightly shorter than the previous model. There is so much legroom and the car let you move the seat of the front passenger for more stretching. The headroom and shoulder room has also been improved from the previous versions. The seats are upholstered in premium ivory leather and the double stitching and outstanding support give extremely comfortable experience to the rear passengers. The car now feels much more luxury with the improved quality of the door pads. For more details on Honda Accord visit Isc2013
Honda Accord Engine & Performance
The all-new Honda Accord Hybrid derives its power from the Sport Hybrid Intelligent Multi Mode Drive hybrid system, which features a 2.0 L 4-cylinder DOHC i-VTEC petrol engine and 2 electric motors. The electric motors are powered by a 1.3 kWh Lithium-Ion battery. The total power output is 211 bhp, out of which the petrol mill generates 145 bhp. The engine is linked to an e-CVT automatic transmission, which transmits the power to the front wheels. Honda Accord Hybrid offers three driving modes: EV, Hybrid and Engine. In the EV Mode, the power is provided by the electric motors as they draw it from the Lithium-ion battery.
In the Hybrid mode, the petrol engine powers the generator motor, which then provides energy to the driving motor. In case of the Engine mode, the petrol motor powers the wheels directly. Besides the aforementioned three driving modes, two additional driving modes, Sport and Economy, can be activated by pressing the buttons on the centre console. The hybrid sedan is being hailed as the most refined and fuel-efficient hybrid model in its segment.
Honda Accord Hybrid mileage reaches an impressive figure of 23.1 kmpl (ARAI specified), which makes it the most fuel efficient hybrid sedan in the segment. With hybrid technology on board, Honda claims that Accord offers highest fuel economy in the segment. The sedan has also an ECON button and pressing this enhances the fuel economy which the company claims is 23.1kmpl, certified by ARAI.
Honda Accord Driving Dynamics
The suspension system in Accord seems to be clearly biased towards the comfort side. It filters out road undulations quite well providing comfortable and stress-free driving experience. The road noise is par with the German counterparts. This is possible because of the active noise cancellation system which includes dual microphones, audio system speakers and an electronic processor that keep off low-frequency sound of the roads from filtering into the cabin. The steering is also accurate, well weighted with a nice grip and fair amount of stability at high speeds.
Honda Accord Safety & Security
The Honda Accord Hybrid sedan gets ventilated disc brakes at the front wheels, while solid discs do the duty at the rear wheels. In terms of safety, Honda Accord Hybrid specifications have gone a level ahead, and some never-seen-before features have been introduced in the form of ‘LaneWatch’ Blind Spot Monitoring System, Multi-angle Rear View Camera and Active Cornering Lights.
In addition, the sedan also comes with an array of safety features, such as 6 airbags, 3-point seatbelt for each seat, front seatbelts with pre-tensioner and load limiter, Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS), Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with Traction Control, Brake Assist, and Hill Start Assist (HSA) as standard.
